Voces Summer Institute: Accepting Applications
Voces is a FREE month-long summer writing institute for teens (ages 15-18) presented each summer by the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Teens spend 4 WEEKS IN JUNE writing, creating art, writing, learning from guest artists, writing, sharing, writing, collaborating, writing, and reading/performing for peers and the public at two celebratory events. Call for Photos for Qué Chola Photo Board (Deadline: March 8)
Qué Chola is an art exhibition at the NHCC Art Museum in Albuquerque, N.M., that features cholas and homegirls in art and pop culture. The artworks celebrate her and her unique style as symbols of strength, power, and resilience. The exhibition opens on March 8, 2019 and runs through August 4, 2019. Many people within our communities have friends and family donned the Chola look and maybe we did ourselves. First Friday: Volunteer Education and Conversation
9:00 am – 11 am On the first Friday of each month, NHCC docents and core volunteers meet for coffee and conversation along with monthly presentations on topics that build the knowledge and skills of the docent core to give tours, educate the NHCC visitors and share the NHCC mission and programs. Carnaval 2019: with PANdemonium and Odara Dance Ensemble
7:30 pm The NHCC’s annual celebration of Carnaval is a dazzling spectacle of vibrant dance, engaging music, and beautiful costumes, featuring the band PANdemonium and the Odara Dance Ensemble and showcasing the Carnaval celebrations of Cuba, Trinidad, Brazil and New Orleans. Carnaval, the festive season occurring before Lent in many countries, including Latin American and Caribbean nations as well as parts of the United States, is one of the world’s most widespread celebrations and one of its biggest parties. Mundos de Mestizaje
12 pm to 5 pm A Vision of History through Fresco… Mundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. ABQ Philharmonic Presents “Art and Music Combined!” (Rental)
3 pm - 4:30 pm Music director Byron Herrington conducts the ABQ Philharmonic in “Art and Music Combined!” Students create artwork based on listening to the music, which is then projected above the orchestra as well as displayed in the lobby. ¡Baile! Rueda de Casino (Cuban Salsa) Dance Class
6 pm to 7 pm Beginning and Intermediate – This class is geared for teenagers and adults. Come learn footwork, partner skills and choreography. No experience necessary. 7 pm to 8 pm Intermediate and Advanced – In order to participate in this class, dancers must know how to keep time, closed position calls, dame, enchufla, and outside turn. Writing Workshop: Fiction (All Genres)
6 pm, Wednesdays (eight weeks between January 16 and March 6) The NHCC is committed to cultivating local writers and celebrating their work. In this workshop, writers read excerpts from books by Latinx authors, engage in a variety of writing exercises that build skills and generate new writing,.
