Voces Summer Institute: Accepting Applications
Voces is a FREE month-long summer writing institute for teens (ages 15-18) presented each summer by the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Teens spend 4 WEEKS IN JUNE writing, creating art, writing, learning from guest artists, writing, sharing, writing, collaborating, writing, and reading/performing for peers and the public at two celebratory events. ¡HAH! Happy Arte Hour
5:30 pm to 7:30 pm On the first Thursday of the month, NHCC invites adults for artistic fun in a relaxed social setting, which includes snacks, refreshments, beer & wine for sale from Pop Fizz. This month we will learn with artist, Pamela Enriquez-Courts whose artwork is in our current exhibit, "Qué Chola". She will show us how she works with patterns and floral elements. First Friday: Volunteer Education and Conversation
9:00 am – 11 am On the first Friday of each month, NHCC docents and core volunteers meet for coffee and conversation along with monthly presentations on topics that build the knowledge and skills of the docent core to give tours, educate the NHCC visitors and share the NHCC mission and programs. ¡Vamos al Museo!
10:30 am to noon On the first Saturday of the month, the National Hispanic Cultural Center invites families to ¡Vamos al Museo!, an artist lead hands-on art experience. Our morning begins with inspiration in the art museum, looking at design, materials and construction. Back in the education building we will create our own art piece to take home. Ballet Folklórico Santa Fe and the NHCC Present Traditions! Folklórico Dance Spectacular
2 pm & 7:30 pm Mainstage evening show begins at 7:30 pm, with a pre-show live mariachi concert beginning at 6:30 pm in the lobby and moving to the auditorium at 7 pm. Come early and enjoy a full night of music and dance! Traditions is a folkloric dance showcase featuring three New Mexico ensembles, including Ballet Folklórico Santa Fe, Albuquerque’s Grupo Folklórico Desoluna, and northern New Mexico’s Baile Ilusión, accompanied by Banda Neluayotl from Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico. Mundos de Mestizaje
12 pm to 5 pm A Vision of History through Fresco… Mundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. 2 pm Join us for a paired perspective tour of the exhibition, Qué Chola, with Dr. Nancy López and Jessica Helen Lopez as they share their unique insights on the artworks and exhibition as a whole! Dr. López is a professor of sociology at the University of New Mexico. Mariachi Los Camperos (Rental)
7:30 pm AMP Concerts presents Mariachi Los Camperos. A two-time Grammy Award winner founded in 1961 by Natividad “Nati” Cano, Mariachi Los Camperos has played a fundamental role in the development of mariachi music in the United States by training and mentoring new generations of musicians. Cano was a visionary leader who took mariachi performance out of customary locations such as cantinas and into concert halls. ¡Baile! Rueda de Casino (Cuban Salsa) Dance Class
6 pm to 7 pm Beginning and Intermediate – This class is geared for teenagers and adults. Come learn footwork, partner skills and choreography. No experience necessary. 7 pm to 8 pm Intermediate and Advanced – In order to participate in this class, dancers must know how to keep time, closed position calls, dame, enchufla, and outside turn.
