¡RESILIENCIA! The Experience of Jewish Communities in Spain and the Americas: Double Feature Film Screening

¡RESILIENCIA! The Experience of Jewish Communities in Spain and the Americas. Organized by Instituto Cervantes,Casa Sefarad@Nahalat Shalom, Festival Djudeo-Espanyol, National Hispanic Cultural Center. In collaboration with Consulate of Mexico, Red de Juderías de España, Diputación of Lleida, Latin American and Iberian Institute at UNM, Consulate General of Israel in Houston, Jewish Federation of New Mexico, Congregation B´Nai Israel, Congregation Albert, ADL Mountain States Region, New Mexico Humanities Council and Century Automotive, a Mapfre Company.

7 pm – “Persecuted and saved” (2017) Directors: Daniel and Jaume Serra. Between 5,000 and 7,000 Jews managed to reach the Spanish border fleeing Europe by crossing the Lleida Pyrenees to Spain. This valuable documentary honors the memory of those who fled from persecution and those who helped make that possible.

8 pm – “Your wishes in heaven (Tu boca en los cielos)”. NM Premier. Rachey Muyal, an 87-year-old descendant of Sephardim expelled from Spain in 1492 delivers a handwritten letter to the tombs of Catholic Monarchs at Granada in which she confesses to those responsible for the expulsion that the Jews do not have any resentment against them. The letter takes us on a delightful journey covering 500 years of coexistence enjoyed by the Jews in the lands of the Maghreb (Morocco, Tunisia, & Algeria). Followed by Q&A with Director Miguel Ángel Nieto Solís.
