Indigenous Borderlands in North America Symposium

This symposium seeks to develop new borderland and border-crossing approaches to continental North America that center Indigenous peoples, homelands, political concerns, and related dynamics – temporally and spatially expanding borderlands frameworks. Bringing historians in strategic conversation with scholars of other disciplines and with Indigenous community members, we ask how cross-disciplinary and community-facing dialogue can advance humanistic knowledge, developing new ways to envision borders, crossings, histories, and futures in contexts of social and environmental change. Early Childhood Bilingual Storytime-Indigenous People’s Month, featuring “Estoy Orgullosa de Mi Pasado”

10:00 am Join us as we celebrate Indigenous People’s Month with a special reading of Estoy Orgullosa de Mi Pasado, by Amy White. Estoy Orgullosa de Mi Pasado tells the story of a Navajo girl named Tania. When she talks about her clan and their homes, about the clothes she wears, and about what her family produces, we can tell how proud she is of being a Native American girl. Free community event. Lecture: Indigenous Influences on Spanish Language- Guarani and Nahuatl

7:00 pm Dr. Josefina Bittar, a professor at the Languages and Applied Linguistics Department at UC Santa Cruz, and Dr. Carson Morris, NHCC History and Literary Arts Program Manager, present lectures on the influences of Guarani and Nahuatl on the Spanish language. Mundos de Mestizaje: Torreón Tour

11 am (MST) The National Hispanic Cultural Center is offering a guided tour of the Mundos de Mestizaje fresco by Frederico Vigil twice a week, Thursdays and Fridays at 11 am. Located in the Torreón on the NHCC Campus, Mundos de Mestizaje depicts thousands of years of Hispanic culture, history, and identity. Admission for the tour is $2 and tickets are available for advance purchase below. Tickets can also be purchased in the New Mexico Mutual Welcome Center, depending on availability. Capacity for each tour is limited.

National Latinx Writers Gathering: A Virtual Event for Latinx Writers in all Genres

The second National Latinx Writers Gathering (NLWG) will take place October 14-17, 2021. It is open to any Latinx writer working in any genre. All events for the NLWG will be virtual.
