2 pm to 5 pm Join the National Hispanic Cultural Center in celebrating the life of Dr. Orcilia Zuniga Forbes on October 8, 2016, in the Albuquerque Journal Theatre and Cayetana Romero Lobby, both within the NHCC’s Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts. Dr. Zuniga Forbes was born on June 17, 1938, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and passed on August 28, 2015. The eldest of eight children and mother of two, Dr. Zuniga Forbes was a remarkable woman who cared deeply about her family and community. (more…)

La Pasión de Mariachi: Salute to Mariachi History and Excellence

5:30 pm La Pasión de Mariachi is a celebration of the art form of mariachi. The purpose is to create greater awareness, understanding and appreciation of traditional and authentic mariachi music by providing insights into the music, band member make-up, and instruments. Mariachi groups, like orchestras, are typically comprised of 18 to 20 members; many of the instruments, such as the guitarrón, are unique to this form of music. 2 pm to 4 pm The National Hispanic Cultural Center presents an afternoon talk, screenings, and book signing of “Hidden Chicano Cinema: Film Dramas in the Borderlands.” by A. Gabriel Meléndez the Distinguished Professor of American Studies at the University of New Mexico. He has authored books on borderlands literature and film, serves on the board of the Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage Project and is a general editor for the Pasó por aquí Series at UNM Press. DreamBuilders 2016

9 am to 3:30 pm Join us on April 15th for DreamBuilders 2016, an annual STEAM event developed to inspire and foster interest in the intersection of the Arts with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines. This is a community project designed to focus on artistic expressions enabled through and integrated with technology while highlighting our rich cultural identity.
