Join us at the Center as we kick off Hispanic Heritage Month with a day of activities for the entire family! Our Fiesta de Cultura features a family-friendly celebration of independence and creative expression through the arts inspired by Hispanic culture. Activities include a scavenger hunt, a story walk, music from UNM String Lab’s Mad About Music, and mask-making based on the Center’s new mascot!

Día de Familia: Tierra Hermosa

3:00 to 4:30 pm: Screening of Boy & The World (Brazil, 2013)

Celebrate Earth Day at the NHCC with art activities, music, film, and poetry for all! Take a stroll along the Bosque and honor our beautiful earth through the arts. Guests will explore bats with RD Wildlife and native seeds with the U.S. Forest Service. Everyone is encouraged to bring their bike for minor repairs! Story Riders will host a bike clinic.

Express your love of the earth through poetry and take a poetry walk with the New Mexico Poetry Society. Art activities include plein air painting on the bosque and other nature-inspired projects that connect art and science. Tierra Adentro Charter School Dance Ensemble will present a flamenco pre-film performance. Then, finish out the day with a free film screening of the award-winning Brazilian animated children’s film, Boy & The World.

Día de Familia y Comunidad: Fiesta de Barelas

Join us for arts activities and music during a day that honors the Barelas community, one of Albuquerque’s oldest neighborhoods. Visitors will have a chance to make paper architecture, maracas, and weavings.

Join Chuy Martinez and other flamenco performers for sing-along presentations featuring music from the John Donald Robb New Mexico music archives. Barelas neighborhood community organizations, such as Barelas Senior Center, Barelas Community Center, Working Classroom, Los Jardines and more, will be on hand to share information about their programs.

Día de Familia: Día de los Muertos

The spirit of Día de los Muertos comes alive at our next Día de Familia!

Decorate sugar skulls, craft a mini-ofrenda and marigolds, get your face painted, and contribute to our community ofrenda while you enjoy music and dance traditions of Día de los Muertos.

Noche de Familia

5:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Join us at the Center for an evening of Halloween fun for the whole family! Our Noche de Familia will feature trick-or-treating, artmaking, music, and a free screening of Coco at 7:00 pm. The screening is on a first come first served seating. Please arrive early to guarantee a seat.

Día de Familia: Visiones del Futuro

Celebrate your dreams of the future through the arts! Make a futuristic costume piece with artist Mike Moreno and explore creative dramatic movement for this family friendly free event.

Families can also visit the NHCC art museum for free and learn more about exhibits, including Fronteras del Futuro: Art in New Mexico and Beyond, which explores the intersections of art, science, and technologies. Pencils, crayons, erasers, and colored pencils will be given away to start off the school year with a splash of color!
