Baila! Baila!’s: Christmas in New Mexico

Baila! Baila!’s annual holiday show is a whirlwind extravaganza, taking audiences on a journey through the sights and sounds of Christmas in New Mexico. Music, song, and dance with the traditional Southwestern flair that has been cultivated in our state over the generations, as well as unique segments saluting Christmas traditions from around the world, will delight theatre-goers of all ages. In 2022, Baila! Baila! will be celebrating its 33rd year in spectacular fashion. Christmas in New Mexico features a large, multigenerational cast including dancers as young as six, as well as Baila! Baila!’s professional company dancers. Special guest performances include live mariachi and an appearance by company founder Israela Garcia.

Baila! Baila! Dance Academy was founded in 1990 with the mission of educating students solely in traditional Mexican folk dance. The school’s curriculum expanded to additional dance genres including country western, salsa, hip hop, classical ballet, and Danza Azteca.

Tickets range from $22 to $32, with a $2 discount for students, seniors, and NHCC Members.

Yjastros, featuring invited guests Rafael Estévez and Valeriano Paños

The National Institute of Flamenco and the National Hispanic Cultural Center present Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company in Çiertas Danças, featuring invited artists Rafael Estévez and Valeriano Paños, and musical guests, singer Alicia Morales and guitarist Ángel Ruíz. Yjastros proudly brings the creative visions of world-renowned flamenco artists to the American public, while cultivating the living art of flamenco in the United States. Guest choreographers and dancers Rafael Estévez and Valeriano Paños, winners of the Spanish National Dance Prize for choreography, will present their work SILENCIOS. In addition to stunning dance from Yjastros and Estévez/Paños, audiences will delight in new music from Alicia Morales and Ángel Ruíz. Yjastros is the flamenco company in residence in the University of New Mexico Dance Program.

The Albuquerque Folk Festival

¡Globalquerque!

¡Globalquerque!, New Mexico’s Annual Celebration of World Music and Culture, has become a premiere festival in the Southwest since its inception in 2005. The purpose of this annual music and culture festival is to highlight cultures of the world alongside the traditional cultures of New Mexico. The event utilizes multiple stages at the NHCC, including the Plaza Mayor, the Albuquerque Journal Theatre, and the History and Literary Arts courtyard (the Fountain Stage), and features a Global Village of Craft, Culture, and Cuisine and a variety of workshops, demonstrations, and other family activities, along with two nights of performances from around the globe. The festival has featured numerous artists from Spain and Latin American countries, as well as Hispanic artists from New Mexico. Some of these artists have performed at the NHCC at other events comprising part of the Performing Arts program’s seasonal programming.

Live Pop Up Salsa 2: End of Summer Night Swing

NHCC & Melaza Music Present Live Pop Up Salsa 2: End of Summer Night Swing. This night offers a MainStage showcase of some of New Mexico’s hardest working dancers, dance teachers, choreographers, and dance students, who may not have opportunities to demonstrate their art. The evening begins with an hour of dance shows in the Albuquerque Journal Theatre. At the end of the showcase, Fausto Cuevas y La Moderna will perform in the HLA Fountain Courtyard.

NM Jazz Latino Orchestra

In their fifth performance at the NHCC, “Cuba Linda,” the New Mexico Jazz Latino Orchestra (NMJLO) honors the invaluable contributions of Cuban artists to the genres of Latin jazz and salsa. Their journey into the musical styles that have been introduced to the world by beloved Cuban legends begins with Latin jazz interpretations.
