The 2019 Winter Spanish Market is back on the 7th and 8th of December! Experience authentic 400-year-old traditions and innovative Spanish Colonial style artwork, made by New Mexico artists. Come and join this Hispanic festival including art, local music, food, demonstrations and more. Interact personally with extraordinary artists, learn about their traditions and take home a special purchase to add to a collection or give as a gift.

New Mexico Philharmonic presents Brass, Winds, & Bach’s Air. The NMPhil winds and brass step out to warm this midwinter afternoon! Dvořák’s Serenade for Winds, scored for two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, three French horns, cello, and double bass, is both lyrical and intensely beautiful. French horns and trumpets stand out in Crespo’s rollicking Spirit of Brass.

Breathe in the beauty of Bach’s “Air on the G String.” Then—four trumpets, four trombones, horn, and tuba frame Jan Koetsier’s Brass Symphony—a masterpiece of the brass repertoire. Finally, two gorgeous 16th-century Gabrieli Canzons.

Opera Southwest presents Daniel Catán’s Il Postino, a fully staged opera with orchestra, sung in Spanish with both Spanish and English translation supertitles, and presented in two acts with one intermission.

Presented in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center, Il Postino is based on the novel Ardiente Paciencia by Antonio Skármeta, as well as the film by Michael Radford. When exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda arrives on a tiny Italian island, he receives so much fan mail that Mario is hired as his personal postman. Mario soon becomes Neruda’s student, learning the art of poetry to woo a local barmaid. Inspired by Neruda, Mario’s poetic voice continues to take wing as he expresses the struggles of his fellow working class villagers. A firm friendship develops, and the postman is forever a changed man.

New Mexico Philharmonic: Music from Within Our Midst

New Mexico Philharmonic presents Music from Within Our Midst. Composer Robert Alexander was appointed choirmaster at St. Salvator in Vienna in 1935 and served as organist at the Vienna Augustinian church. In 1939, he immigrated to New York, continuing his career. His grandson, Dr. Ron Bronitsky, lives in Albuquerque. Alexander’s striking Concerto Grosso for Strings, Op. 164 begins this program. Then, from well-known composer, conductor, singer, and former Professor of Music at UNM—a marvelous work that’s been heard in some of the world’s great concert halls: Bradley Ellingboe’s Requiem.
