DNAWORKS and the NHCC Present The Real James Bond Was…Dominican!

February 14, 2019February 17, 2019
Wells Fargo Auditorium 1701 4th Street SW
Albuquerque, NM 87102 United States

7:30 pm—Thursday-Saturday
2 pm—Sunday

What happens when a Dominican boy in Queens—with an imagination far beyond his shell, who won’t go anywhere without his nerf gun and is obsessed with James Bond—finds out that the real James Bond was Dominican? Written and performed by Chris Rivas, The Real James Bond Was…Dominican! is a true story, about how Porfirio Rubirosa was Ian Fleming’s inspiration for Bond, and how this discovery sets off a whole tragi-comic journey for a young Dominican actor-to-be. It is a young man’s guide to love, sex, color, code-switching, whitewashing, success, fake-it-till-you-make-it, and the roller coaster ride of finding one’s true self.

Albuquerque, NM 87102 United States

February 17, 20, 22 & 24, 2019

OSW is thrilled to present Piazzolla’s only opera in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center. The story goes that his surrealist depiction of the titular Maria’s sleepwalk through violence, death, the afterlife, and rebirth was composed entirely on the bandoneón. The opera effortlessly weaves classical contrapuntal techniques together with milongas, cabarets, and mid-century jazz for a thrilling dance through the underbelly of Buenos Aires. Anthony Barrese conducts.

Albuquerque Journal Theatre 1701 4th St SW
Albuquerque, NM 87102 United States

7:30 pm

The NHCC’s annual celebration of Carnaval is a dazzling spectacle of vibrant dance, engaging music, and beautiful costumes, featuring the band PANdemonium and the Odara Dance Ensemble and showcasing the Carnaval celebrations of Cuba, Trinidad, Brazil and New Orleans.

Carnaval, the festive season occurring before Lent in many countries, including Latin American and Caribbean nations as well as parts of the United States, is one of the world’s most widespread celebrations and one of its biggest parties. Among the guidelines that the Performing Arts program has developed, refined, and utilized since 1999 to design its programming and curate its seasons is the provision of a variety of annual programming that is specific to seasons, holidays, and celebrations, as well as culture-specific. Carnaval was first celebrated at the NHCC in 2002, and has been part of the Center’s regular seasonal programming since 2006, with regular performances by presenting partners Frank Leto & PANdemonium and Pilar Leto & the Odara Dance Ensemble. This year’s Carnaval 2019 marks the 14th annual Carnaval Celebration at the NHCC’s Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts.

March 28, 2019March 29, 2019

Migrant Songs is a choral piece based on stories of migration, both human and non-human. Specifically, the project explores the relationship between the songs of human and bird migration, through oral interviews gathering stories and songs from migrants who currently live in the Albuquerque area and research and field recordings of birds in northern New Mexico, and bringing the songs of migrants into inter-species dialogue through the creation of a choir performance. The work highlights the stories and songs that cut across different migration histories, tying Hispanic culture in historic and contemporary relationships to Asian, African, and Middle Eastern culture within the New Mexican context.
