¡Salud y Sabor! Local Herbs/Yerbas

5:30 pm to 7:30 pm

Salud y Sabor, a partnership between the Agri-cultura Network, Street Food Institute, and the NHCC, is a free evening of food, art, and entertainment aimed at providing families with an opportunity to connect around nutrition, cooking, healthy lifestyles, and culture.

Once a month, community members gather for cooking demonstrations using fresh, locally grown ingredients, as well as fun art activities for kids and adults, health screenings, and live entertainment. An emphasis is placed on exploring traditional Hispanic dishes, providing basic information/free screenings from local Western and alternative health practitioners, and creating a vibrant atmosphere with art activities and live music. In most months, free samples of local produce are available.

This month’s theme is Local Herbs/Yerbas.

For more information on Salud y Sabor, contact David Torres at 505/246-2261 or email him DavidM.Torres@state.nm.us

La Chamba 125

La Chamba

7:30 pm

La Chamba is driven by Electric Guitar that fuses 60’s psychedelic inspired surf-pop from Peru with Afro-Latin rhythms. With roots in East and South Central Los Angeles, “Chamba” literally means “work,” and is a word used throughout the barrios of Latin America to describe your hustle. Their sound pays homage to the melodies and grooves of Peruvian Chicha music popular among the working-classes of Lima and the Amazon. La Chamba encourages folks to let-loose and release their grind on the dance floor! Their audience is as much a part of their performance as they are.

Pascuala Ilabaca 125

Domingos en Arte: Pascuala Ilabaca y Fauna

July 15

7:30 pm

A rising star among young Chilean singer-songwriters, Pascuala Ilabaca creates music that is rooted in Chilean folk traditions and informed by a childhood moving from Barcelona to Chile, Mexico to India, and back again, while incorporating strands of jazz, pop, rock, and other influences into the mix. Her voice is as vibrant as the brilliant red accordion she plays, and her song lyrics focus on positive messages of feminism, anti-violence, and cultural heritage. Ilabaca’s first album, Pascuala canta a Violeta, is an homage to Chilean composer, songwriter, and folklorist Violeta Parra. Her formidable band, Fauna, is made up of accordion, keyboard, saxophone, clarinet, percussion, bass, and guitar.

Changui Majadero 125

Domingos en Arte: Changüi Majadero

July 29

7: 30 pm

Playing Cuban roots music out of East Los Angeles, Changüí Majadero is a blazing five-piece band that has honed a deeply informed and highly personal take on changüí, a surging Afro-Cuban musical tradition that took shape in the late 19th century on the eastern side of the island around Guantanamo. It’s one of the foundational styles that gave birth to son, salsa and timba, and in the hands of Changüí Majadero the music feels as fresh and intoxicating as a stiff shot of rum. Founded by guitarist/vocalist Gabriel García, an expert on Cuban tres guitar, the band brings Cuba’s country blues to new ears.

Domingos en Arte: Nosotros

August 12

7:30 pm

Nosotros is one of the most recognizable Latin bands in the Southwest United States. They have twice been featured on NPR’s Alt Latino, twice been named winners in the prestigious John Lennon Songwriting Competition, been awarded 11 NM Music Awards and have shared the stage with some of the biggest names in music. This 9-piece Latin music powerhouse seamlessly combines Latin rhythms with elements of Rock, Salsa, Jazz and Cumbia, creating an original sound that is unmistakably Nosotros. But M.E. Schenck of Hyperactive Music Magazine may have interpreted their sound best by saying “Nosotros’ music is not to be explained, it is to be felt in the pit of our souls.”

Domingos en Arte: Baracutanga

August 19

7:30 pm

Baracutanga is a seven-piece band representing four different countries (Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, USA) that prides itself on arranging traditional South American rhythms in new and interesting ways, such as huayño and cumbia with Middle-Eastern darbuka or mixing Afro-Cuban bata and Afro-Peruvian festejo with Andean zampoñas, among several other rhythmic combinations. This kind of experimentation, coupled with blending ancestral traditions with a modern sensibility, has resulted in an exciting and distinct Latin flavor all its own that leaves dancing crowds always wanting more.
