Summer Institute Performances: Circo Latino

Thursday—5:30 pm Friday—10:30 am The NHCC’s Summer Institutes—Circo Latino, the Manoa Project, and Voces—are presenting performances based on the exhibit The House on Mango Street:  Artists Interpret Community and Sandra Cisneros’ book of the same name. Join Circo Latino for a stirring performance inspired by themes of family, community, identity, and home—appropriate for all ages. The young artists, ages 8-13, will present an original show featuring trapeze, juggling, stilting, acrobatics, clowning, live music, and more! Free public event; suggested donation $5

La Pasión de Mariachi: Salute to Mariachi History and Excellence

5:30 pm La Pasión de Mariachi is a celebration of the art form of mariachi. The purpose is to create greater awareness, understanding and appreciation of traditional and authentic mariachi music by providing insights into the music, band member make-up, and instruments. Mariachi groups, like orchestras, are typically comprised of 18 to 20 members; many of the instruments, such as the guitarrón, are unique to this form of music. On Point Dance Studio: 2016 Summer Recital (Rental)

6 pm On Point Dance Studio presents our 2016 Summer Recital. Students will perform routines they have learned during the spring semester—a combination of folklórico, jazz, ballet, hip hop, and contemporary.. $12, $17, $22

The Mari-Luci Jaramillo Collection Opening Reception & Exhibition

6 pm The National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Research Library and Archives is pleased to announce that the Mari-Luci Jaramillo Collection consisting of papers, photographs, scrapbooks, and ephemera documenting the illustrious career of the Honorable Mari-Luci Jaramillo, former Ambassador to Honduras; Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Latin America; civil rights activist; and educator, will soon be available for research and study.  Join us for the opening reception and exhibition of items from the collection, on November 18th, 2016 at 6pm in the History and Literary Arts Building. (more…)

La Canoa: Making Frederico Vigil’s Miracle Wall

2 pm Our La Canoa Legacy series features talks by Hispanic-Latino faculty and community researchers with long-standing and accomplished records of research and teaching about New Mexico and the region. The final talk of this season features Aracely Chapa, Director of the Center for Regional Studies, at UNM, talking about the process that resulted in Frederico Vigil’s fresco “Mundos de Mestizaje” that graces the wall of the Torreon on the NHCC Campus.
