Aliento: Carnaval 2017, School Day Event

10 am The NHCC’s annual celebration of Carnaval is a dazzling spectacle of vibrant dance, engaging music, and beautiful costumes, featuring the band PANdemonium and the Odara Dance Ensemble and showcasing the Carnaval celebrations of Cuba, Trinidad, Brazil and New Orleans. Aliento: CONTRA-TIEMPO, Agua Furiosa, School Day Event

10 am CONTRA-TIEMPO, a multilingual Los Angeles-based dance company founded in 2005, is dedicated to transforming the world through dance.  The company creates physically intense and politically astute performance work that moves audiences to imagine what is possible. Its unique Urban Latin Dance Theater brings to life voices not traditionally heard on the concert stage, while building community and facilitating dialogue. 10 am Jesús Muñoz is recognized for his deep understanding of cante flamenco and his improvisational control over rhythm. His company is known internationally for its dedication to preserving the traditional improvisational philosophy of flamenco dance and music. This is a free event with registration. 8 pm both days Jesús Muñoz Flamenco’s new production, íntimo, takes you deep into the heart of the company to reveal never-before-seen works.  Join the cast as they take you on an intimate journey through the heart of Andalucia. Aliento: Dzul Dance Company

7:30 pm Dzul Dance fuses dance with aerial arts, contortion, and acrobatics to communicate indigenous pre-Hispanic, Mexican and Latin culture and create bridges between contemporary art and historical heritage. Artistic director Javier Dzul grew up in the jungles of southern Mexico performing Mayan ritual dance until the age of 16; he has since performed with Ballet Nacional de México, Ballet Folklórico de México, the Martha Graham Dance Company, Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble, and American Indian Dance Theater. School Day Event: The Nutcracker Ballet in the Land of Enchantment

10 am Festival Ballet Albuquerque and the NHCC, with choreography by Patricia Dickinson Wells, present The Nutcracker Ballet in the Land of Enchantment. This beloved holiday classic comes to life in the late 1800s in territorial New Mexico, with many surprises including Spanish and flamenco dancers, dancing southwestern snakes, sheep and shepherdesses, hummingbirds, a lively fandango, and a storyteller doll with children. Traditional favorites such as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Snowflakes, and Flowers are also preserved in all their splendor, while beautiful sets, lavish western Victorian-era costumes (more…)

Jesús Muñoz Flamenco, Live!

8 pm, both evenings Jesús Muñoz Flamenco presents the company’s new production, Live!, showcasing the artistry of 12 internationally renowned dancers and musicians from Spain to Latin America. Participating performers have composed for platinum flamenco albums, prestigious dance companies, and popular artists such as José Merce, El Barrio, Marc Anthony, and Andrea Bocelli. Jesús Muñoz Flamenco takes a year-long hiatus from themed productions to dive into an exploration of ideas and the explosive dynamic of flamenco collaboration.
