National Institute of Flamenco & the NHCC present the Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company in Xicano Power. Xicano Power is the seasonal culmination of Yjastros’ progression and evolution. This performance made its world premiere at the 2023 Festival de Jerez, marking the first time a company from the United States was ever invited to perform in the prestigious international festival. The current concert season marks the performance’s first appearance at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

Festival Flamenco Alburquerque 36 presents Daniel Doña, winner of the 2019 Max Prize for best male dancer, and his awe-inspiring company of dancers and musicians to Festival Flamenco Alburquerque for the first time in the U.S. premiere of Entre Hilos y Huesos.

Entre Hilos y Huesos is the latest choreographic imagining of the company DDC Danza, directed by dancer and choreographer Daniel Doña. This work moves and shakes, it is poetic justice expressed from an avant-garde dance. It dares to move through tradition and contemporaneity, taking refuge in flamenco and the songs of yesteryear while overflowing and exploding in the current moment.

Festival Flamenco Alburquerque 36 presents Patricia Guerrero y Compañía in Deliranza. Winner of the 2021 Spanish National Dance Prize, the prodigious young dancer and her company immerse audiences into a performance of a thousand dreamlike adventures.

In Deliranza, Guerrero sets a work in a time conducive to creation and reverie: rehearsal time, where the creator, exhausted by the hours of work, rests and, like Alice, falls into a dream that makes her cross the limits of the everyday world. She breaks with logic enters into new, transformative worlds. As she descends into dreams, she encounters characters and obstacles, but above all the sounds of flamenco, the Soleá, the voice of a Granaína/Bulería or a Mariana… inviting the viewer to imagine and explore the sometimes lonely but gorgeous and dreamlike process of creation.

Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company proudly brings the creative visions of world-renowned flamenco artists to the American public, while cultivating the living art of flamenco in the United States. Together with the Orchestra of New Spain, Yjastros presents Quem Quæritis? A Flamenco Drama. This performance draws from the tradition of the pastorela, told through imaginative, dynamic flamenco performance. Yjastros dramatizes human ingenuity and resilience through intricate choreographic masterpieces by Artistic Director Joaquín Encinias, Marco Flores, and other choreographers. This season highlights tradition and innovation in the world of flamenco and features choreographies made by artists at the global forefront of the art form, as well as unique musical accompaniment from the award-winning Orchestra of New Spain. Yjastros is the flamenco company in residence in the University of New Mexico Dance Program.

Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company Presents Yjastros By Design, the seasonal culmination of the company’s progression and evolution. This season’s performances show the company’s resurgence from a challenging period that has deepened the members’ resolve to continue honing their flamenco expression in new ways. Yjastros By Design features intricate re-imaginings of choreographic masterpieces set on Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company by Artistic Director Joaquín Encinias, together with guest artist Lidón Patiño from Castellón, Spain, and other choreographers. Both Encinias and Patiño will take the stage with the company in this production.

This season highlights tradition and innovation in the world of flamenco and features choreographies created by artists at the global forefront of the art form. Yjastros is the flamenco company in residence with the University of New Mexico Dance Program.
