National Institute of Flamenco & the NHCC present the Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company in Xicano Power. Xicano Power is the seasonal culmination of Yjastros’ progression and evolution. This performance made its world premiere at the 2023 Festival de Jerez, marking the first time a company from the United States was ever invited to perform in the prestigious international festival. The current concert season marks the performance’s first appearance at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

What does it mean to be an American revolutionary today? Grace Lee Boggs is a 98-year-old Chinese American woman in Detroit whose vision of revolution will surprise you. A writer, activist, and philosopher rooted for more than 70 years in the African American movement, she has devoted her life to an evolving revolution that encompasses the contradictions of America’s past and its potentially radical future.
The documentary film, American Revolutionary: The Evolution of Grace Lee Boggs, plunges us into Boggs’s lifetime of vital thinking and action, traversing the major U.S. social movements of the last century; from labor to civil rights, to Black Power, feminism, the Asian American and environmental justice movements and beyond. Boggs’s constantly evolving strategy—her willingness to re-evaluate and change tactics in relation to the world shifting around her—drives the story forward.

Weaving together mariachi, ranchera, and opera music, Cecilia tells the story of her family, her early childhood in the farm fields of Idaho, the songs that her mother taught her, and her thrilling career in opera.

Teatro Paraguas and the NHCC present United in Blood: The Revolutionary Music and Poetry of Chile. United in Blood is a fully staged performance celebrating the artistic, social, and political vision of four of Chile’s most beloved musicians and poets: Pablo Neruda, Victor Jara, Violeta Parra, and Gabriela Mistral. Though not all four knew each other, several of them did, and they are all intimately connected through their shared passions, political sensibilities, and deep concern for humanity.
Songs and poems will be performed in the original Spanish, with English translations either performed or projected above the stage.

AMP Concerts and the NHCC Present Los Gaiteros & Madalitso Band
Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto was established in Colombia in the mid 1950s. In 1968, they performed at the Olympic Cultural Games in Mexico. Their touring, the exceptional quality of their musicians across generations, and the fact that they are one of the few gaita ensembles whose music has been commercially produced have made them the most important musical group of gaitas and Cumbia in Colombia and worldwide.
Madalitso Band are a two-man musical army from Malawi. Described as ‘uplifting and vibrant’ by the BBC, the band plays the babatone, a home-made instrument which is very popular in Malawi and the four-string guitar, creating the traditional Malawi banjo sound. The babatone player works on the side as a “gardener” and the guitar player works as a “watchman” as required. Around Malawi they are revered as musical prophets.
Special price of $12 for general admission. Kids 12 years old and younger are free at the door night of show.
