Who We Are, Together: NM Families Project Presentation for Romero and Martinez

2-4 pm

This project engaged 2-3 generations of seven NM families in testing their DNA and researching their family lineage with the help of the NHCC and experts in the field. For seven Sundays these families will present what they learned about who they are, where they are, where they came from, and from whom they descend, followed by dialogue. Join us to explore the diverse heritage and history of NM through our families: who we are, together.

For this presentation, hear more about the histories of the families Romero and Martinez.

The Great River Irish and Scottish Music Festival featuring Saoirse and the Old Blind Dogs (Rental)

Festival hours 1:00 – 6:00 (Free)
Concert begins at 6:30 pm

The Great River Irish and Scottish Music Festival is an annual free outdoor festival from 1 pm to 6 pm with music and dance performances and workshops, followed by a ticketed concert. (Concert not included in the free festival)

This year’s festival will feature Albuquerque’s own Saoirse and the renowned Scottish band Old Blind Dogs, plus appearances by local artists Grace Broadhead, Louis Scuderi and the Duke City Ceili Band.

Concert ticket prices: $23 w/ a $5 discount for kids 12 & younger, seniors and SSCCE members

6 pm to 7:15 pm—Beginning and Intermediate Class.
No experience is necessary to participate in this class.

7:15 pm to 8:15 pm—Advanced Class
In order to participate in this class, dancers must come to at least one 6 pm class and be familiar with the vocabulary and movement introduced in these classes.

Dance classes are taught by Larry Heard and Rueda 505 Friends.

If you are beginning or advanced in the traditional New Mexican style of embroidery, bring your current colcha project along and enjoy these monthly, informal, community work sessions to share ideas, resources and encouragement!

¡Globalquerque!, New Mexico’s 15th Annual World Music & Culture Celebration, returns to the National Hispanic Cultural Center on September 20 and 21, 2019. This year’s festival features three stages of music from five continents over two nights. Relax in the intimate courtyard setting of the Fountain Stage, enjoy larger bands in the state-of-the-art 691-seat Journal Theatre, or dance to groove-heavy world music on the Plaza Mayor’s outdoor Festival Stage. The National Hispanic Cultural Center is located at 1701 Fourth Street SW in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A Vision of History through Fresco…

Mundos de Mestizaje by Frederico Vigil is a mural housed in the Torreón on the campus of the National Hispanic Cultural Center. This monumental fresco depicts thousands of years of Hispanic history highlighting diverse cultural connections between people and places from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas. The 4,000 square foot painting is one of the largest frescos in North America.

The digitized imagery of the painting ensures that this culturally significant work can be a sharing and learning experience for students and families anywhere. We invite you to explore the imagery, history and complexities of the Mundos de Mestizaje mural.
